Single Lives
5 m approximate running time 1 hour 30 minutes
SINGLE LIVES is the story of the lifelong relationship of two gay men. We encounter Eric and Frank in two separate times of their lives, as young and older men. Their past and present unfold together as they face and try to come to terms with the choices, secrets and rewards of a life spent together. SINGLE LIVES was workshopped at Boston University’s Boston Playwrights’ Theatre in the spring of 1997.
The earlier and later stories of the play unfold over parallel lines. While the 1996 story moves forward, the 1939 story moves backward. The fun thing about writing this play was the “pyramid” structure. As the earlier story moves back in time, the later story moves forward - at the end, the beginning of the relationship and the end are joined. This play got a terrific production at Boston Playwright’s Theater in 1998, directed by the late Pam Mills. |
