This was my third full-length play (my second one in English), and the most difficult one to write. I was young, didn’t know much about the craft, and I got ambitious. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing. I’d start and end up places I never meant to go. This was one that I agonized over, and started and re-started numerous times, over many many months.
It was also an emotionally difficult time. I was fairly new in Provincetown, and the epidemic was in full swing. This play is a rendering of that period: a dying man’s family have gathered at his house. It’s likely that Alan won’t make it through the night. His devoted nurse will ultimately decide when to administer the morphine that will “make the transition easier” but those that surround him - his parents, his lover and his sister - are having a hard time letting go. |
It’s a dark play reflecting a dark period in my life. And although this play challenged me to the core, it also got me through some tough times. My friend Susan Grilli - now the founder and artistic director of the fantastic COUNTER PRODUCTIONS OF PROVINCETOWN - gave it a terrific production.
